Luna-Tic is a nod back to the old days of building robots. Its made as simply and cheaply as possible as most the 25mm Box Section chassis is recycled from the scrapyard or friends with a decent stockpile willing to help. Its lifting wedge is powered by a 400kg Linear Actuator able to move any robot in its path. Its internals may be cheap, but they are still ones that have proved their worth in many robots before.

The robot never made an inpact as drive chains plauged its short life span. It appeared at a total of 4 live shows and competed in the FRA UK Heavyweight championships in 2018. Its only win came against 2point0 and S.M.I.D.S.Y at Manchester 2018. It received a few upgrades in terms of armour and better Speed Controllers over its 12 months, but did little to help its competivness. Its final event was at Stevenage 2018, where it received a lot of damage to its wheels, wedge mounts and chassis. The bent chassis although fixable it was decided to retire the robot and save the internals for a better later version.

Luna-Tic (Featherweight)

WEIGHT: 13.3kg

WEAPON: Electric Lifting Wedge

DIAMENTIONS: 45cm (L) x 40cm (W) x 10cm (H)

DRIVE: Four 12v Cordless Drill Motors

The teams first bot has proved its worth during several Extreme Robots Live shows and during the International Featherweight Championships at Insomnia 61 by finishing in the Top 16. It started life as a trial run to learn the lessons required to build a heavyweight. The chassis is made entirely from 10mm HDPE and held together using wood screws. Made on the Garden and Kitchen table, the only tools used where a Jigsaw and Drill. This proved you don't need fancy equipment and great knowledge to compete at the top level.

Luna-Tic finished in the top 16 during its first competitive event in 2017 and has remained a solid work horse and is known in the robot commuinty as a robot that doesn't know when to die. Driving has been shared between Team Capt. Chris and his eldest daughter Felicity and despite never winning against big names it has remained competitive and entertaining with several memorable fights over the years. It finally received some silverware winning the Annihilator in 2019. Although saying Luna-Tic will retire it has happily found a home in the Sportman class at Robodojo

CROTA (Featherweight)

WEIGHT: 10kg

WEAPON: Electric Axe

DIAMENTIONS: 49cm (L) x 42cm (W) x 10cm (H)

DRIVE: Two 12v Cordless Drill Motors

BATTERY: 3s Li-po, 2200mAh

ARMOUR: 2mm Mild Steel (Top and Bottom), 10mm HDPE (side)

ESC: Hobbywing Quicrun 10-60 (drive and weapon)

COST: £180

YEAR BUILT: 2018

CROTA was a training bot for the younger two members of the Team/Family. The long days of Live shows can be very boring for the people not directly involved, so this was built so they could take part and learn robotics so they have been involved most of the way of its construction. The idea was to build CROTA as cheaply as possible and uses a lot of parts the team already had spare. The other reasoning was to try out new building techniques learnt since finishing Featherweight Luna-Tic in preparation more later builds.

CROTA is unique in one aspect, the axe can rotate around the whole chassis allowing it to be used either way the robot sits. A fully invertible axebot is something you don’t see. This was never intended to win competitions, but has gain respect as another robot that doesn't quit. It has twice been run over by a 1000kg house robot and been on the receiving end of several nasty spinners. The axe got a massive re build mid 2019 improving its reliability and power. But as of 2020 it has been sold to a new team to help get them started on their own combat robotics road trip.

Raving Luna-Tic (Featherweight)
Raving LT.jpg

WEIGHT: 13.6kg

WEAPON: 50kg Linear Actuator Lifter (2018), Front hinged flipper (2019)

DIAMENTIONS: 45cm (L) x 48cm (W) x 8cm (H).

DRIVE: Two Propdrive 5060, Brushless motors

BATTERY: 6s Lipo (drive), 4s (weapon)

ARMOUR: 6mm Hardox front, 3mm Hardox sides

ESC: Red brick 200amp (Drive), Hobbywing Quicrun WP-860 (weapon)

COST: £500

YEAR BUILT: 2018

Basically Luna-Tic mk2, with lessons directly taken from the FRA International Championships 2017. Raving Luna-Tic was quickly drawn out,  with improvements across the board.  More power to the drive and better armour and protection form devastating spinning weapons. The decision to go brushless was fairly easy, as building using 5060 brushless motors complete with the ESC worked out cheaper than going with high powered brushed motors. Making to robot itself smaller made sence as it allowed extra weight for better armour. 6mm hardox wear plate at the front should stop any spinner in this weight class. Placement of the lifter was also done with consideration as to best 'keep it attached' unlike Luna-Tic's fight with Equinox.  Its sits directly inside the wedge so any spinning attack from the sides of bottom will throw the whole robot and not just the lifting arms and mechanism.

Raving as had a very troubled life, it was thrown into its first event untested and since has had a massive re build (to change the weapon to a front hinging flipper) and tweaks to get try and get it more reliable. It has never shown its true potential due to the teams restricted building techniques, experience and funds.  There is still hope to get it working as indended but will require and complete re build at some point.

Toothless (featherweight)
pre champs 2019.jpg

WEIGHT: 12.6kg

WEAPON: 50kg Linear Actuator

DIAMENTIONS: 57cm (L) x 50cm (W) x 20cm (H).

DRIVE: 4 x 18v Drill motors

BATTERY: 6s Lipo, 3000mAh

ARMOUR: 3mm REAX (front), 20mm HDPE (side)

ESC: Ragebridge v2 (Drive), TZ85a (weapon)

COST: £300

YEAR BUILT: 2019

Designed and part built by the teams eldest daughter Felicity, Toothless has quickly earnt its reputation as a tough bot. Built mid 2019, it cemented a top 16 place in the UK and won the 2019 Gladiator within months of it being finished, mainly due to its unique front spikes. This was a gift to the team and the robot was built around it, incorporating a simple lifter. Its tough HDPE exterior has already dealt with some of the toughest spinners around and incorporates several lessons and improvements from previous robots.  Toothless is preparing for Full Combat at Robodojo in 2020, with a few new attachments.

Grimlock (featherweight)

FW finish.jpg

WEIGHT: unknown

WEAPON: Jaws of life

DIAMENTIONS: 55cm (L) x 45cm (W) x 30cm (H).

DRIVE: Two 775 gearmotors

BATTERY: 4s Li-po, 5000mAh

ARMOUR: 2mm Mild steel and 15mm HDPE

ESC: Hobbywing Quicrun 860

COST: £60

YEAR BUILT: 2020

Grimlock took inspiration directly from the TV show Robot Wars house robot Sir Killalot.  His side arm jaws, crushed and cleaned up dead robots after fights and looked good doing it. The words "build the weapon first" from legends Razer, meant little was planned or designed chassis wise until the jaws mechanism was finished. However, Beetle weight Maximum Orgedrive provided a good 'control bot' platform  to mount the massive weapon. Most of the robot is built from spare parts and recycled materials, hence why the cheap cost of making it. Becasue the design is rather untested, the team didn't want to spend money on an unproven design.

Claws 2 (Beetleweight)

WEIGHT: 1.5kg

WEAPON: 2x Grabbing claws powered from a 20kg Servo

DIAMENTIONS: 25cm (L) x 22cm (W) x 10cm (H).

DRIVE: Two 25cm 12v Gearmotors

BATTERY: 4s Li-po, 750mAh

ARMOUR: 2mm Mild Steel wedge, 10mm HDPE sides.

ESC: VEX 29

COST: £70

YEAR BUILT: 2018

Made as a promise to Felicity that TEAM Capt. Chris would build her a competitive version of her first build Claws1. Claws2 was presented to her on her Birthday at Extreme Robots Manchester 2018.  This would enable the team to atend lower weight class tournaments up and down the country. Taking the original design of Claws1, a weapon was added plus a defensive wedge while beefing up the chassis using as much of the 1.5kg weight allowance as possible.  Felicity decorated it herself and was finished June 2018 making its debut at Bristol Bot Builders 3 in July 2018.

Claws2 featured in Bugglebots on YouTube, finishing 7th and earning the 'Best Newcomers' trophy.  While not the most damaging robot about, Claws2 can take a hit or three and can out push most opponents with its powerful drive system. It returned for Series 2 of Bugglebots with a few minor improvements and while having a much tougher event, still managed to equal its place from 2018. Claws 2 is now full retired, many years of spinners has taken its toll and was really struggling at the end. It sits of Felicitys shelf, pride of place.

Luna-Tic 360 (Beetleweight)
LT 360v2.jpg

WEIGHT: 1.5kg

WEAPON: 360 degree lifting wedge from a 37mm gearmotor

DIAMENTIONS: cm (L) x cm (W) x cm (H).

DRIVE: Four 25cm 12v Gearmotors

ARMOUR: 3mm Reax Steel wedge

ESC: BB10 (drive & weapon)

COST: £100

YEAR BUILT: 2019

Already on its second version before competing, Luna-Tic 360 is a crowd favourite. Its unique 360 degree lifter is able to roly poly the bot in celebration or getting out of sticky situations in the arena.  The team has wanted to build a Beetle Luna-Tic since the success of Claws2, but scaling down the featherweight Luna-Tic would mean it would look and act the same as fellow beetle weight competitor Snappy. So inspiration was drawn from Shockwave from the rebooted Robot Wars. With an alternate set up including forks designed for vertical spinners, Luna-Tic 360 is capable and willing to tackle any opposition head on.

Both Sythe and Stormbreaker are temp bots for the youngest two members of the team. Sythe's chassis was started in 2017, but finally finished in 2019 and reached the top 16 in the FRA champs in the same year. Stormbreaker was originally an early Bonecrusher but given to the team so all the team members had something to drive. It is built to with stand anything and did well in its pervoius life.

Claws & Baby Luna-Tic (Small Beetleweight)

NAME: Claws

WEIGHT: 500g

WEAPON: None (Pusher)

NAME: Luna-Tic

WEIGHT: 1.1kg

WEAPON: Lifter

Claws and Luna-Tic we’re made for our first charity event in July 2017. Combined with our homemade pallet arena the two robots showcased the sport of robot fighting to crowds at Whitchurch Relay for Life and have continued ever since at other events and various school fares. Made from 3mm HDPE, cheap 1000rpm gearmotors and radio gear, they offer a great way for younger people to get involved in the sport. Like Felicity has, as Claws was designed and built by her.

Herty (beetleweight)

BW Herty.jpg

Herty is an Unfinished Beetleweight and will remain unfinished for the time being. It was designed by Verity and we we're trying to get it built for Bugglebots 2019.  It features a 360 degree axe that rotates between the two halves of the chassis. Unfortunately it couldn't be finished before filming even after 3 versions were built desperately trying to get it within weight but big enough to fit everything inside. Although the build is cancelled, a Featherweight verison is being built and is already looking promising.
